From Quail Valley to Sienna: two kinds of wiring
Missouri City incorporated in 1956 and grew in stages: Fondren Park in the early 1960s, Quail Valley along Cartwright Road later that decade, then Lake Olympia and part of Riverstone. Sienna, built on former plantation land south of Highway 6, is mostly outside city limits, although the city annexed some former utility-district sections in 2023. The city has been zoned since 1981, so most housing here is single-family.
That matters for AV work. In an older Quail Valley house, speakers, keypads and network cable were usually added later, fished through attics, with equipment parked in a closet or the garage. A newer Sienna or Riverstone home is more likely to have builder prewire running to a structured-media panel. Prewire is not a finished system, though: some of those cables were never terminated or tested.
When a scene only half works
A typical call: the evening button sets the lights, but the shades stay up or the music never starts. A scene is a list of commands one system sends to several others, such as Lutron lighting and shades, a Control4, Savant or Crestron controller, and the audio equipment. When one device fails to follow, the fault is usually in that one link, not the whole system.
Before calling, write down the scene name, when it ran and which devices ignored it. Then try each device’s own control: the Lutron keypad, the shade’s wall switch, the receiver’s remote. A shade that moves from its own keypad but not from the scene points to integration or programming. One that will not move at all points to power, the motor or its radio link. Please don’t force shade fabric or pull dimmers out of the wall to check them.
What gets checked on each platform
On Control4, Obsidian AV reviews the Composer Pro project on the controller, confirms the dealer account can be transferred, and looks at the Zigbee mesh that carries many keypads and dimmers. Savant work starts with the host model, the Blueprint configuration and the licensing tied to the Savant Pro or Power account. With Crestron, the key question is whether the compiled program’s source files exist, since the original programmer often kept them. Lutron RadioRA and HomeWorks systems have their own processor and project, and the link to the main controller is checked separately.

Lake lots, levees and where the rack lives
Many Missouri City neighborhoods are laid out around lakes and detention ponds, and Sienna sits behind levees along the Brazos River managed by its own levee improvement district. For AV, that means outdoor speakers and patio TVs need hardware rated for humidity and sun, and the rack belongs somewhere dry and ventilated, not on a garage floor. If equipment was ever exposed to water, say so; it changes what should be tested before anything is reused.

Taking over a system someone else installed
If the original installer has moved on, start with an inventory: controller or host model, lighting processor, amplifiers and the number of audio zones. From there Obsidian AV can say whether the programming can be kept and edited, needs rebuilding, or whether only one part, such as a failed Lutron repeater or amplifier channel, needs replacing. You get those options plainly before work begins.

Will replacing the main controller fix a shade that will not move?
Not necessarily. Check whether the shade responds to its own keypad or remote. If it does not, the cause is more likely power, the motor or its wireless link than the main controller, and that is diagnosed first.
Our Sienna home came with prewire but no equipment. Can it be used?
Often, yes. Each cable is identified, terminated and tested before it is relied on. Some builder prewire was never finished or was damaged during construction, so testing comes before buying speakers or a controller.
Can our lighting scenes be changed without replacing the Lutron system?
Usually. It depends on the Lutron model and whether its project and processor can be accessed. Scene levels and button assignments can typically be edited without new hardware.
