A Savant system that was set up wrong: a Katy service call.

Smart-home equipment rack being serviced in a Houston closet

This job in Katy started as an ordinary service call. The homeowner had a Savant system that another company had installed and programmed, and several parts of it had never worked properly: the outdoor audio, the master bedroom, the living room, the patio TV and the Wi-Fi. By the end, Obsidian AV had reworked most of the job. The equipment was not the main problem. The way it had been set up was.

Outdoor speakers running from a surround receiver

Four zones of outdoor audio were connected to a home theater surround receiver instead of a multi-zone amplifier. A surround receiver is built for one room facing one screen. In its normal stereo mode it sends nothing to its surround channels, so outdoor speakers wired to those channels only play when the receiver is in an "extended stereo" or "all-channel stereo" mode. That mode had not been set, and the outdoor zones could not be controlled separately anyway.

Obsidian AV replaced the old outdoor speakers with 8-inch in-ceiling speakers and added a Savant audio matrix with an 8-channel amplifier. Each outdoor zone now has its own amplifier channel, its own volume and its own source in the Savant app.

A living room and a master bedroom that never worked right

The living room had not been wired correctly. Obsidian AV installed a new Yamaha receiver for the living room and upgraded the surround speakers, so the room now works as a proper surround system instead of also trying to feed the patio.

The master bedroom had never worked correctly. It was added to the Savant system with video control, using HDMI baluns to carry video to the room.

Licensing and programming

The Savant system was not running the correct licensing for what was installed. Obsidian AV corrected the licensing, updated the system and reprogrammed it, so every room, source and zone appears in the app and responds the way the homeowner expects. The outdoor patio TV was brought into the system and now works too.

The network: about 12 Mbps to about 900 Mbps

A Savant system depends on the home network. The app finds the host over Wi-Fi, and streaming sources, video and control all share the same network. Here, speeds were around 12 Mbps. Obsidian AV removed a failing network switch, updated the cable modem and installed the right wireless access points for the house and the outdoor areas. Afterward, speeds measured about 900 Mbps download and upload, with Wi-Fi inside the house and outside.

Slow or unreliable Wi-Fi is often mistaken for a broken control system. If the Savant app keeps losing the host, check the network before replacing control hardware.

What changed

  • Outdoor audio: new 8-inch in-ceiling speakers, a Savant audio matrix and an 8-channel amplifier, with independent zones.
  • Living room: a new Yamaha receiver and upgraded surround speakers.
  • Master bedroom: added to the system, with video control over HDMI baluns.
  • Savant: correct licensing, updated and reprogrammed.
  • Patio TV: working.
  • Network: failing switch removed, cable modem updated, correct access points installed; about 12 Mbps before, about 900 Mbps after.

What to take from this job

When a Savant system has never worked right, the hardware is often fine. Check how outdoor zones are amplified, whether the licensing matches the installed rooms and sources, and whether the network can carry the load. Fixing those usually costs far less than replacing the system.

If your Savant system has silent zones, rooms that never worked or an app that keeps disconnecting, see Savant service and repair or contact us.
